Fed Up With This Cowspiracy

Save the Planet and the Next Generation

As of recently, literally a little over a week ago, I stumbled upon the documentary Cowspiracy on Netflix. To be honest, I’ve always been a couple things nobody guesses: 1) a feminist 2) an environmentalist. I view life in the eyes of the world I would want my kids to grow up in, and my grandkids and so forth. Before watching this documentary I thought I was doing everything I could do to help the environment. I walk whenever I can, I recycle religiously, I always have all of my appliances unplugged when not in use, all of my lights are off when I’m not using them, and even my thermostat stays off unless I’m just unbearably uncomfortable. I thought I was doing pretty well until I laid my eyes on Cowspiracy.

For lack of a better term, the world we live in, know and love is headed to hell in a sugar covered, meat made hand basket. I’ll be the first to tell you I love meat! My favorite food is bacon and hamburgers (separately). But Through watching this documentary and another called Fed Up I just couldn’t keep living the way I was living. I did research, I watched more documentaries, I read and watched until I was just completely convinced! Gluttony is what will kill the human race. Just listen to a few of these statistics:

  1. Animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions, more than the combined exhaust from all transportation (13%)
  2. Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.
  3. Methane is 25-100 times more destructive than CO2 on a 20 year time frame (all animals excrete methane)
  4. Methane has a global warming potential 86 times that of CO2 on a 20 year time frame.
  5. Livestock is responsible for 65% of all human – related emissions of nitrous oxide – A greenhouse gas with 296 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide, and which stays in the atmosphere for 150 years.
  6. Emissions from agriculture projected to increase 80% by 2050.
  7. Energy related emissions expected to increase 20% by 2040.
  8. US methane emissions from livestock and natural gas are nearly equal.
  9. Cows produce 150 Billion gallons of methane per day.
  10. A 20-ounce bottle of soda contains the equivalent of approximately 17 teaspoons of sugar.
  11. One soda a day increases a child’s chance of obesity by 60%.
  12. In 2012, Americans consumed an average of 765 grams of sugar every 5 days, or 130 pounds each year.
  13. It will take a 110-pound child 75 minutes of bike riding to burn off the calories in one 20-ounce bottle of soda.
  14. More than 9 million adolescents (children and teens 6-19 years old) are considered overweight.
  15. One in five Black children ages 2 to 19 is obese, and one in seven White children.

And the below is just from big business and agriculture! It’s not even including big business agricultures impact on water and land.  Whenever I say, “I’m doing it for the next generation,” people always say well I expect to be dead by then, but what they don’t understand is that they won’t be! Not only will they not be dead, but even if they are it’s shocking that people are really ok with putting the next generation of life in harms way and to experience so much hardship for simply selfish reasons. The meaning and expression of selflessness has simply been lost. It’s almost as if the word doesn’t even exist in the English dictionary. The American way is do what you want when you want and don’t care about anybody else, and that right there is the mentality that will end our stay on this planet as a race.
